About federal tax brackets
The US uses a progressive income tax system with seven brackets (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%). Each rate applies only to the income within that bracket — not to your entire income. This means your effective tax rate is always lower than your top (marginal) rate.
The IRS adjusts bracket thresholds annually for inflation. Filing status affects the thresholds significantly — married filing jointly thresholds are roughly double the single filer thresholds for most brackets.
