A flat amount you can subtract from taxable income without itemizing.
For 2026 the standard deduction is roughly $15,000 single / $30,000 married filing jointly. Most filers take the standard deduction because it exceeds what they could itemize. If your mortgage interest, state tax, and charitable giving exceed it, itemize instead.
